Danube campaign

The Danube is at a crossroads -- perhaps never before has the river faced so many opportunities, but also unfortunately dire threats.

For the first time, organisations from across the Danube River from Germany to Romania and Ukraine have come together to campaign for the Danube as a living river to face dire threats.  They also want to take advantage of the following unprecedented opportunities for maintaining the Danube as a living river:

Water Framework Directive. The EU's innovative Water Framework Directive provides a framework and impetus for achieving good ecological quality on the Danube, including countries that are not EU members. The Danube is being looked at by many as a test case for the implementaiton of this key piece of legislation.

Dialogue on shipping on the Danube. A dialogue process from mid to late 2007 brought together a variety of interests, including WWF and other environmental organisations as well as national governments and the European Commission, to discuss a way forward for shipping on the Danube.

Beyond the Danube. While the main focus of debate is on the Danube as the most international river, the outcome will also have consequences for rivers elsewhere. At stake are living rivers and the opportunity to identify and develop innovative approaches that integrate shipping among the myriad of other benefits and services provided by living rivers.

We need your support to ensure that shipping on the Danube -- and elsewhere --  is developed sustainably, not at the cost of the living river and the benefits and services that it provides.
